Discover the fascinating origins of Maiwai, a craft believed to have emerged in the Boso Peninsula toward the end of the Edo period (1603–1867). Its popularity later spread along the Pacific coast, from Aomori down to Shizuoka. This treasured tradition flourished from the Meiji era through the mid-Showa era, supported by numerous skilled Maiwai artisans—especially in the Minami Boso region, where the craft first took root.
Today, the legacy of Maiwai lives on in Kamogawa City, where only two stores have preserved this art form. Both have received the prestigious designation of Chiba Prefecture's Traditional Crafts.
